Le Dormeur Du Val takes its title from a short poem by the symbolist writer Arthur Rimbaud, from 1870. The softness of the poem's content and language, falling away to reveal a macabre context has inspired the variety of orchestral sounds in this piece and stark contrast in moods. Pastoral elements and military references, as well as intense violence and moments of surreal calm serve to evoke some of the feeling of the poem.
